Walden, or, The Hungry Ghost of John Thoreau is a radical adaptation of Henry David Thoreau's classic of American literature. Informed by contemporary Thoreau scholarship and mobilizing an array of deliberate anachronisms, this tech-saturated show displays an antic, ludic, and deeply ironic attitude toward its subject. It locates the heart of Thoreau's Walden, not in his experiment in independent living, but in an act of grieving. The author of Walden went into the woods, this play argues, not to live deliberately, but to mourn a brother and best friend.
